  1. This allows you to stop receiving notifications. However, at least on iphone, I can still see the number of unread messages for a group that has been previously muted. In addition, this group keeps coming at the top of the list of groups every time a new message is sent to it. Is there a way to disable these? Can you stop seeing even that there are unread messages in a specific group without having to leave that group?

    Thanks,

    • Sorry for late reply. As of now there is no option to completely block notifications from muted groups. As you said notification from muted group also appears whenever you get a message from any other contact or group which is not muted because there is no other way as of now to show new notifications to the user, maybe Whatsapp will customize this feature in future.

      • Thanks for your answer. I hope they come up with a fix for this sooner than later since is kind of annoying. There are groups that one doesn’t want to leave but really want to take a break from time to time.

  2. Though I have muted a WhatsApp group chat room and have removed the notification tag and also archived it,the moment a message is posted in the room it comes in notification panel and also shows in main screen.Isn’t there any method to make the room dormant though not exiting from it.

    • This feature is currently not supported by Whatsapp. You’ll not receive any notification only until muted group members are sending you messages. As soon as you receive a message from a unmuted group or member you’ll see all the notifications together. Will keep you updated in case Whatsapp releases a feature of customized notifications.

      • Just go to group information page and there you can see an option to mute the group. That way you’ll stop receiving notifications of new messages by anyone in that group but will keep on receiving messages until you exit from the group or delete it. If you do not want to use the group at all for some time just exit from that group and ask someone to add you back whenever you want to join that group.

  3. Hi,
My need is, my mobile internet data should not be consumed for a specific group rather than exiting from them. So if we set mute option during that period time whether mob internet data will be used or not. Reply me. Thanks

    • You can not disable mobile data for a specific group. That’s too much to ask for :D. Currently there is no such option provided by Whatsapp to leave the group for specific duration of time and rejoin automatically.

  4. Thank you. I wanted to stop the notifications for a long time, and remember doing it once before on my old phone but have forgotten. Fantastic!!

  5. in the event of one of a group member mute the notification of that group, if I send a msg in that group am I able to see the name of the person in delivery or seen list????

    • No, it’s not possible yet. If you are an admin and two members have blocked each other on their whatsapp but are members of the group they will be able to see each other’s message in that group and as an admin you cannot stop that.

  6. Hi , i am not active whatsapp user however without my willingness i am forcefully added by group admin. to join a group which i never want to be the part of. i tried exiting the group but again added back on whatsapp. Please advise how i can do this act and group admin of anyone in the group doesn’t get notified .

    • As of now the best available option is to mute that group and also make sure to uncheck the ‘notifications’ check box. You’ll remain part of that group but will not be bothered every time with a new notification.

  7. my whats group is trouble me. when i exit from grop they add me many time so please give me solution from this goup.i am freedom to choose grop and exit group

  8. I have created a group for some purpose. But there are lot of misuse by members. I want to close the group forever. Please suggest how to do.

    • Its’ no possible to delete the group completely as of now. Even if you are admin of group as soon as you delete the group some other person from the group will be automatically made the admin. So, in order to delete a group completely you need to ask everyone to delete that group.

  9. I hope Whatsapp comes with a fix soon because the Mute and unchecking the notification box is not working. I still receive my groups notifications! I want to keep in contact with my groups. I don’t want to exit but sometimes is too much, especially when I am working.

  10. I have followed the above instructions on how to mute a whatsapp group and uncheck so that I don’t receive the messages but I still get the messages from the group coming in

  11. By using mute, can I save mobile data but speak with other whatsapp inviduals(I will lose data here). But I want to totally ignore the group.

    • Unitil you are part of the group, even though you have muted you won’t be able to save any data. Muting a group means disabling notifications , messages will anyways gets delivered to your whatsapp.

Hi Kaushal, will you please update me once the soloution to above issue is ready. My email address is : bikassingh2007@gmail.com

  13. Mute and blocking admin alone does not work. Whatsapp becomes a headache at times. Wish they come up with a solution soon……Similarly, seeking permission before adding to a group should also be enabled.

  14. Very informative.I have a doubt in one of the whatsapp feature.in one of the group ,after leaving the group also that group admin is able to send msgs…but his name is not listed in the group info.how is this possible?or is this a prank?kindly reply

  15. i just don’t want block the group;i have tried to mute the group but i still recieve messages from that group there is NO OTHER WAY TO BLOCK ANY GROUP?

    • As of now there is no way to stop receiving messages without leaving it. Muting a group just stops notifications from that group only till the time there is no other notifications from non muted groups or contacts.

  16. Thanks for this information, I will give it a try immediately, ‘cos am really worried about the wrongly posted message. This is about the second or third time am making that mistake . I hope it works ,Thanks again .

  17. Actually what we need is to deactivate the group and temporary will not receive any till we reactivate. Mute is different than off group. More or less like what we can do in zello apps.
Is good if WhatsApp apps can revise and make an option to user can choose to mute or off(activate or deactivate)

    • You can ‘Mute’ a group up to one year starting from a week by going to group settings and selecting ‘Mute’ option. By muting the group you will continue receiving messages in that group but will not get notifications from that group. You will see messages from that muted group in notifications only if, you get a notification from some other contact or group which is not muted.

  18. Need to have confirmation while adding someone to group, if he/she confirms then only will get added if declines should not be added.
Right now any one can add you to any group..even i can add zukerberg’s wife to any of the group. this is not done

  19. I have muted the group for a year and even disabled the show notification option but I’m still getting notifications.

  20. Thanks for enlightening this feature. It’s very annoying and also delicate to exit a group. However to begin with there should be a feature that the administrator shd take permission before admitting anyone.

Also one question: does mute means it only mutes only the sound when msg is recd or completely stops msgs?

  21. I tried but it didn’t work. Messaged still keep coming. Only the intmation doesn’t. It becomes silent. Did I miss something?

  22. It did not cancel receiving notifications from the group, just muted it, I wanted to stop having the pop up notification on the top of my screen in order it do not interfere with my gameplay

  23. This is a nice one, however I think it will be a good idea if a selected group can be made dormant such that no information enters an individual account from the group ie data(Internet cost) will stop running with the option of un-dormant in the future.
